My samples are done!!

I am so elated and relieved that my sample are ready for pick up. I have selected 30 of my best clients to try out my hair products. The sample have been divided between two groups... Locs and Braids/Twists/Naturals.

Below are the photos of what inside each of the boxes according to the group.

Group 1: Braids/Twists/Naturals

Herbal Oil: Jojoba Oil infusion (nettle, sage, horsetail, burdock root, lemongrass), fractionated coconut oil, meadowfoam seed oil, marula oil, vitamin E, and Bergamot & Grapefruit essential oils.

Hydrating Butter: Cupuacu Butter, Shea Butter, Grape Seed Oil, Marula Oil, Vitamin E, and tropical fragrance.

Group 2: Locs

Herbal Hydrator: Aloe Vera Juice, Purified Water Infusion (Blue Malva, Horsetail, Nettle, Sage, Flaxseeds), glycerin, sea silk, and papaya coconut fragrance oil, grapefruit seed extract & citric acid (preservatives).

Herbal Oil: Jojoba Oil infusion (nettle, sage, horsetail, burdock root, lemongrass), fractionated coconut oil, apricot kernel oil, hemp seed oil, vitamin E, and Bergamot & Grapefruit essential oils.

Once I receive the feedback from those chosen clients I will know which one will be good! After that I will provide samples of liquid shampoo, conditoner, loc promade/gel, twist creme...

Although, there was a lot of unforeseen misfortunes happening to me since October... I am happy to say that, I love the Lord with all my heart! I still have life, my family, love, friends, and a GREAT support system.

Happy Holidays!!!

It has definitely been a loooooonnnnnngggggg time since I have THOUGHT about making a post! (I'm kinda bad at this lol and I have an app on my phone to make it easier!)

So, I'm doing a post because I wanted to show my 1st order of "A.K.PENNY Custom Gift Sets". I did a set back in May for a friend of mine and one of the recipients asked me to make her a set for Christmas. For my friend, I crocheted 10 purses (and sew-in lining with a pocket) and added whipped butter and sugar cube polish. Unfortunately, I didn't take a photo of that! Ugh...

Fortunately, when this lady called for a set I had my camera ready! I didn't make any crocheted purses because that was going to take too much time. Check out the pictures below. I'm very proud of these sets as well!

Also, I'm making 30 small samples for my chosen clients. (I have already picked them). This is the start of my hair care line for my clients. I'll post pictures for that soon.

Can you believe thAt this week I'm supposed to be on vacation?!?? Bananas! My mind never stops...help?! Lol

Style Profile: Nubi Nubi Twists

Hey! Akiya here again with another style to profile.

I really like this style of twists because of the light fluffy feel to them. However, since the hair I use is a softer texture than the hair for the Kinky Twists or the Senegalese Twists, I do have to start the twist with a braid instead of a twists. But either way it's still a beautiful style.

My Hairstyle: Cornrow Mohawk with Twists

Hello again,

As promised I am going to keep this blog updated. I was at the salon yesterday, had some time before my client arrived, and my hair needed help! Lol

I was inspired to do the above style on myself, by one of my clients (I did something similar to her hair).

Anywho, in the above pictures, I blow dryer my hair and cornrowed the sides like a mohawk, while leaving the middle out.

Now, in this picture I twisted the hair that was left out to complete the style. The best thing about this style isthe 2 for 1! I can wear it with the twists, or wear a twist out, or blow out the middle and wear that! Ok....sooo....that's a 3 for 1 but you get my point lol!

Well, it's been quite some time since the last time I posted any style photos, product updates or crochet/earring making. Shame on me! But, in my defense I have been crazy busy with clients.

I'm now really going to make the effort to keep this blog current for you. Starting of with getting the style photos posted and videos as well.

Here are the updates/additions coming soon...

1.) October 31st - November 2nd I'll be in Atlanta for the Taliah Waajid Natural Hair Seminar (http://www.naturalhair.org she has a great product line as well). I can't wait to go and come back with all new natural hair styling I'm going to learn! And!, I'm taking my video camera with me to video blog the entire trip.

It's been a while since my last posting, I have been very very very busy! However, I come to you with some exciting news....

Starting JUNE 1st, I will be at a NEW LOCATION. I have been a home-based natural hair stylist until June 1st, 2010.

Loc Creme w/ ingredients

Good morning,

Loooong time no post...trying to work on that but, this post is to show off my Mixtress abilities.

This pic is on Loc Creme for my loc client that I have. I used some products from the beauty supply store but, stopped when reading the ingredients.

My creme ingredients are:

Aloe Vera juice
Herbal infused water (burdock root, comfrey root, lavender, and sage)
Soybean oil
Grapeseed oil
Sweet almond oil
Castor oil
Horsetail butter
Grade A shea butter
Oat protein
Calendula extract
Honeyquat
And a natural preservative called Tinosan SDC

It may seem like a lot of ingredients however, each serves a purpose for the hair growth, shine, and health. All of the oils and horsetail butter are light and absorbs easily. The shea butter is in there at a small percentage and will not weight the hair down.

Its a 8 ounce jar of goodness. I call it "Loc Creme" because I am using it on my loc clients however, I used it on my natural hair has well.

Hey there,

I did my hair yesterday morning for a day out and about with my family. I decided to take a photo of it this time because a lot of people do not (can not) believe I can do my own hair without a mirror (I might add). I cornrowed my whole head. Here are the photos (by the way those earrings are made by me):

It has been a while, Crochet Projects!!!

Heeeelllloooo There!!! (*waving*)

It has been quite a while since I've last posted anything on here! (I know right???) This is due to the Spring/Summer season is here and a big wave of new clients have been coming my way. Not to mention I have been working on some crochet projects:

The photo above was the "pieces" for my client's birthday goodie bags, all handmade: the bag, the whipped shea butter, and the sugar cube scrub daisies. With the help of my cousin, we made 9 crochet bags, hand-sew that fabric you see into the bags with a pocket & snap (to close), whipped up some shea butter, made single use sugar cube body scrubs.

I am soooo mad at myself, though! When we finished up the packaging I realized that I didn't have any (charged or extra) batteries in my digital camera (the cellphone's camera did no justice)!!! WHY WHY WHHHHHYYYY!!!!

It was so pretty to see 9 bags already to go to give to the ladies in attendance! Hopefully, someone else will ask me to do a "Goodie Bag" set for their next birthday party or ladies night get-together or something....maybe you?? hint hint ;-)

I did a few hats as well but, this one in particular I really like because it's big enough to hold my fro and even chin-length locs. It's in the tam style with a brim, all black:

Next on the list of projects are 2 sets of threaded earrings and a crochet cellphone cozy:

I made the Red Black & Green earrings for my mother-in-law and the other earrings with cozy are for a friend of mine (a gift that is waaayyy past due!).

Well that is all for now. I will post more since I have 3 more hats and newborn baby set to make....

Style Profile - Loc Extensions

Yesterday I did a Loc Extension installation on a wonderful woman named Shivie Cook. She is one half of the extraordinary RAW food team called The Cook & Butler (http://www.teamraw.com).

Shivie and Cemaaji are located in the Mission area of San Francisco. They both are "cooking" up a storm using foods that are vegan but, yummy to the tummy! Their menu includes - but not limited to:
1. Vurger (delicious vegan burger)
2. Stuffed Mushrooms
3. Strawberry Cheesecake
4. Macadamia, Banana, and Green Vegetable Smoothies
5. Tacos
6. Pizzas
7. Granola
8. Moist Muffins

Shivie found me on her search to get her locs back. I am happy to say that she was very pleased with the loc installation (can't you see on her face yay!) Style Profile - Nubi Nubi Twists

I just finished with my day and would like to share the style I did today. This style is called Nubi Nubi Twists. The hair used: J Collection Afro Kinky Bulk.

It took me about under 4-1/2 hours to complete. I like the Nubi Nubi Twists because they are a softer twist compared to the Kinky Twists. The twists have a fluffy / cloud-like texture to them.

Usually I start my extension twists with a twist however, due to the soft texture of this style I start them with a braid (3 stitches 1/4"). I like this so much it was January's Style of the Month.

Style Profile: Extension Cornrows

Hey I just wanted to put up some photos of extension cornrows I did earlier this afternoon. I choose to do the "feed-in" cornrow method when doing this style. Because of it's beautiful natural look, a lot of hair is NOT used, and it is less stress on the edges.

Style Profile: Loc Extensions

Hey World!! (*waving*)

It is Friday night and I wanted to post photos of today's loc extension installation. This lady has a neon blue/fushia mohawk and wanted neon loc extensions in 4 different colors (neon green, hot pink, pink, and blue). We started at 8am and was finished a little bit before 5pm. Below you will see the before and after pictures.

These are made out of synthetic hair instead of the human afro kinky hair. Mainly, because she wanted these vibrant colors and for this style to be done quickly (instead of waiting to purchase the human then dye it to the colors).

New Project: Crochet Hoop Earrings

Hey!!

I came across a crochet book by a sista in Atlanta named Afya Ibomu. I found it because I wanted to learn how to make crochet earrings, bracelets, tops, and other clothing accessories.

She had a wonderful pattern to make earrings with cabone rings (cabone rings are used to hold curtains in place). I couldn't find any in Michaels or any of the local craft stores. I did find it on eBay but, I didn't want to wait....

So, I used a pair of silver hoop earrings I already had as the frames for this beautiful project! Happy I had them yay yay! I call them "PrettyPenny" (named after my nickname) because the yarn color is close to copper in color.

They are not perfect but, hey it's my 1st time! lol anywho I am ready to try it again & again & again...

Tree Braids Models & Crochet Projects

Hey there,

Been a while since I made a post. I've been doing a lot of client's hair for this rainy season.

In February, I wanted 4 models - my search is semi-complete - I have 3 models. Very happy about that. I will be taking before and after photos of this style so, the beauty can be seen.

I'm also excited that I'm working on my crafts projects again.
I made a matching hat & scraf set - all crocheted my me - for my daughter, threaded earrings & rasta styled beanie set for these rainy days!

Style Profile: Loc Extensions....what are they??

You may have heard of this style but are not sure exactly why or what they are...

This is a form of starting locs for those whom may not want to go through the stages (baby, teenage, adult locs) & just want the adult locs. A person may get this style because their hair texture may not lock (or the process is taking much longer because of their hair texture).

Even though, the end result looks as though you had these locs for years, your hair will still go through the locing stages (baby, teenage, and adult). Normally the client's hair and the extension hair will fuse together within the first 4 weeks and after the first wash. So, if you change your mind make sure it remove them in the 4 week time frame.

You can get the loc extensions as long, short, thick, medium, or thin as you like. For me I will need for your natural hair to be at least 3 1/2" - 4" long to be able to attach the loc to your hair. The extension hair used is human hair. The texture of the human hair is Afro Kinky Bulk. Good brands found in the local beauty supply store are Oscar K and Fashion Source. Online store is www.hisandher.com. This style can also be done with synthetic hair as well for a more semi-temporary style.

This is style can be done on any age and any texture of hair.

Craft Project: Check out these Threaded Earrings!

For Christmas I treated myself to learning the art of Peruvian Threaded Earrings. I am so happy with how fun and easy it was to assemble. In my excitement I made a pair of earrings (on the 1st try might I add) for my cousin's Christmas Present (see above).

What do you think?? It is a Brown frame with Orange, White, and Lavender colored shiny embroidery thread. They are 6-1/2" (I think) from the ear hook to the bottom in a tear drop shape.

In my excitement I posted the photo on my facebook page and now one of my friends from college ask for one as well. Done and Done! I found eBay (oh I looooveee eBay!!) 100 colors of embroidery thread - ordered and shipped - now I have them and I don't know where to begin!!

Elated!! is the word I have frame wire in different colors so stay tuned for photos the results!

Good morning & Happy New Year!!!

First off, my apologies on not making any recent posts.

Things have definitely changed for me in these past few days. I now have new hours of operation.

Sunday - Thursday, 8am to 5pm. Closed Fridays & Saturdays.

I realized that I need time to do my other projects and still be able to spend time with my family. Before I was just working everyday and that's not good for anyone.
This will allow me to continue with my self+propelled web design and new craft projects.

Update: I made liquid black soap shampoo thicker. It is very mositurizing. Yes, yes, yes, I know I am supposed to have the gift baskets done by now. But, really I am not going to give someone something I made that I have not tried myself. Please just hang in there and bear with me with the trial and error stage (*smile*)

This year I am soo excited everything will go as planned God Willing!
I've learned how to make earrings, re-working on my crochet crafts and natural hair products.

1st Annual (unofficial) Holiday Client Appreciation Gifts!

I know it has been awhile since posting (or tweeting). I have been very busy and in a "funk" because of certain past clients trying to break my spirits. However, THEY WILL NOT GET ME DOWN! I just don't understand why people take my kindness for weakness. In lieu of those situations I am going to be putting together gifts for my best clients!

The gifts will include:

Whipped Hair Creme
1 pair of earrings

I really appreciate you because you are the reason why I have not stop doing this. I would like to have all of this done by Christmas however, that may not happen more like December 31st/ January 2nd. When I make the first batch I will take a photo of the complete package.

The gifts will not be delivered through the mail. An email will be sent to those clients selected for pick up.

Vent: let it off ya chest!

This topic will come up from time to time when I need to get something off my chest. Just decided that I need to vent regarding some situations that have come my way these past few days. Please bear with me if I start to ramble:

:::Sidebar::: now I try to be easy going, kind, and courteous to all of those around me. Maybe these are characteristics that screams to ill-hearted people as "let's mess with you!" :::Sidebar:::

Issue #1: Flakes...oh where do I start? I did this person's hair before (once mind you) but total appointments made: um maybe 7! Now, I do not have a problem if things come up and you cancel. My problem is the no-call/no-show "cancellations". This person has done this to me about 3 times. Now, I know what your thinking "why are you still dealing with him?"
Well, it's because I have online appointment making and that's how he gets by me. Then he doesn't make appointments frequently. This last time was the last straw!

Here's what happened: this person booked Nov 31st, Dec 1st, & Dec 22nd with a note asking for loc maintenance & a style. Look at those dates...I know it looks crazy to me too! So, I contacted him immediately to get clarification. Now, he's scheduled correctly.

The first appointment date comes around and I don't hear from him regarding being late, stuck at school/work, nothing! I called him 30 minutes after the start time, phone goes straight to voicemail, left a message that he was cancelled and I was done!

Later on that evening, I kindly emailed him that we are to not do business again and all of his future appointments made are cancelled.

I still haven't heard from him. I'm thanking God for keeping people away who have ill intentions. It may not seem that way to me at first but, in the long run everything works itself out. I just hope that people will understand the value of consideration- to cherish and keep it at all times for one day someone else will try to keep it from you too.

So much has gone on since the last post and I do apologize for not getting my newsletter out on the 1st. Expect to receive it by tomorrow or the 4th (depending on the time).

Anyway, I have figured out how to fully code my website to show my designs. You may not know this but, I'm a geek as well!

Seeking Tree Braid Models

I hope your Thanksgiving was family and fun filled. My brothers came up from LA and we are having a ball.

The end of another month is coming upon us, meaning the new Style Of The Month is here: Nubi Nubi Twists (see the posting below for that style).

Anyway, this is about Tree Braids. A few posts back I did a client's hair in that style and it was my first time. Now, I'm looking for 4 more ladies whom are willing to try this style out. This will help, giving me more practice time to perfect the style and lessen the time of completion.

I am only able to do this style with curly or wavy textured hair (for now). The hair used on the model is: Batik synthetic braiding hair in bulk form. This type of hair is of great quality close to human hair. 4 packs were used to complete the style. The hair comes in 18" length only (that I know of).

I will post later the website so you can see the different textures. The better brands of synthetic hair are Batik, Bonne, and some of the curly FreeTress (only for the textures they produce).

Nubi Nubi Twists (continued)

I finished a good client of mine hair today and I wanted to share with you the photos from this session:

I am really really liking this style. As I said before in my last post, this is the Nubi Nubi Twists, the hair used is the Janet Collection Afro Kinky Bulk. We didn't have to order the hair from the site eon-hair. Which is good because it will cut the cost for us on the west coast. The hair run about $9.99 per pack and you will need about 3 packs.

I am loving this style!!! It is soft and light. Basically, it is different from the normal Kinky Twists or the Senegalese Twists (even though there's another way of that style I want to try... on another post).

Holiday Gifting

Last year, I was on a roll with making bath & body products. Now, I was thinking of doing hair care items. Since, I am in that field that makes much more sense. I will be making the products that I have used on myself.

First, I will be making Black Onyx it has dual usage as a shampoo and a full body wash. Second, Creamy Locs for those who have locs and/or twists styles. Third, Whipped Creamy Pudding a moisturizing cream with light oils for everyday use and other natural hair styling. Lastly, Island Gold a conditioner that can be left in or act as a deep conditioner infused with herbs that promotes healthy hair.

These are the 4 things I will start with first. I have decided to leave them un-scented because everyone may not like what I like. However, if I get a collective poll on the scents then maybe.

They will not be for sale but as gifts. I will selected 5 winners through facebook or twitter. You'll have to answer the trivia questions regarding me and the info that's on my website, www.loveofhair.com.

NEW STYLE: Tree Braids!!

YES YES YESSSS!! I have finally try my hand at Tree Braids (cornrow base). I am very pleased with the job. She is my first model for the style. I have been asked if and when I will be adding this to the list of services...

Well, I believe I am ready to make this the STYLE OF THE MONTH for DECEMBER!!

Actually I will let you be the judge (you can click on the photos):

The model's hair is the Batik by Outre brand (Deep Bulk). It is synthetic hair and 18" in length. In my opinion, it is best to get hair that is at least 18" to ensure the hair covers the braids. For now I am only doing Tree Braids with Curly or Wavy Hair textures because I know for sure I will be able to cover the braid. Until, I grasp the Curly and/or Wavy hair, straight hair will have to wait. Oh, I braided some individual braids at the nape of her neck so, she can wear a ponytail.

It took me 6 hours from start to finish. I do know that's not a good time for this style however, she was my first Tree Braid client. My ideal goal time is 3 1/2 - 4 hours I just need some people who would like to help while getting this beautiful style. I am not sure if it will be for December or January, please give me some feedback.

If you would like to become a model for this style let me know:
I will need about 4 more ladies.
I suggest that the hair has a curly or wavy texture.
The hair should be in bulk form and not on a weft.
Minimum hair length: 18" so hair can cover braids.
Also, if you don't mind, synthetic hair for now until this is completely mastered.

Cornrow Maintenance

Here are some tips on keeping your cornrows fresh.

Make sure that your cornrows are not braided too tight.
Do not be afraid to tell the braider to loosen up; if she/he will not - do not let them continue braiding.

Cornrows that are too tight can pull the hair out from the roots, mostly around the edges.

Cornrows cannot be washed.
Trying to wash your hair while it's cornrowed will make your cornrows unravel quickly.

Your cornrows should last up 2 weeks (natural hair) and up to 3 weeks (extension hair).
Make sure to use a silk scarf, tie your hair every night, and if it starts to get frizzy use a bit of gel (ALCOHOL FREE) before tying the scarf.

NEW STYLE: Nubi Nubi Twists

Yesterday, my client ask for the Nubi Nubi Twists instead of the regular Kinky Twists. I was up for the change and challenge. "How hard could it be???", I thought.

Well, let me tell you, I'm pretty good with the Senegalese Twists and Kinky Twists styles by far are my favorites. So, when I saw the hair and the picture, my first thought was "I got this!"
Man, was I off. I began doing the twists as usual however, it didn't look like the photo. Then I decided to twists in the opposite direction of what I am used to doing.

THAT WAS MY "AHA!" MOMENT.

The twists started to look just like the picture. It did take me longer to do because I'm going against what I'm used to, oh well, I do like a challenge. Once, I found my rhythm it was ON!

The Nubi Nubi Twists are semi-fluffy, has a springy feel and very soft. The hair came from a company in Maryland called EON Hair (http://www.eonhair.com - the photo above is from that website). We used 2-1/4 packs of hair. Funny thing though, I thought this hair was only available on their site however, I did see this same texture in the beauty supply store. Made by Janet Collection or Black N Gold "afro kinky bulk" which is cool for me and my clients. Lowers the cost on shipping. However, I haven't actually tried to use it so I will keep you posted on if Janet Collection or Black N Gold hair really is the same. In the mean time, let's just keeping purchasing from EON Hair until I know for sure.

I'm doing this post before my busy day today. I have 3 people: child natural cornrows, child natural braids, and adult Senegalese Twists. I wanted to talk about the Senegalese Twists for a minute:

They also go by the name Rope Twists or Silky Twists. The style is done the same way as the Kinky Twists with a straighter synthetic hair texture instead of the kinky/dreadlock/afro puff hair texture. Hair used is the regular kanekalon/afrelle braiding hair (I prefer the RastAfri or Black N Gold brands).

Virgin Coconut Oil Benefits

Did you know that coconut oil is not only edible but, can be used in your hair, on your skin, and in the production of soap-making??

Where do I begin about this wonderful fruit?!?! I will just focus on the hair aspect for now. In the above picture is how you would purchase this from the local natural/health food stores. Yes, this is food, why on earth would you put it in your head, you may ask??

Think about it...WHY NOT? Your hair and scalp needs the same amount of nourishment as the foods you put into your mouth. Would you eat plastic? I don't think so. Then why would you put plastic or non-edible products in your hair?

Now that I have your attention let's talk about Coconut Oil as a conditioner and a deep conditioner.

Coconut oil is bursting with fortify fatty acids (rich in fats) that are attracted to the proteins in the hair follicle. The oil can actually penetrate the hair shaft to the cortex reducing protein loss. The oil will enhance and strengthen your hair. Can be used to help with dandruff and dry scalp. It's a light oil allowing it wash out easily.

The oil is really a semi-solid (solid at 75 degrees and lower) but, once placed into the hands will melt easily. I will point out that depending on your hair the oil can be drying (please test before trying). Not all Coconut Oils are created equally - make sure it says EXTRA VIRGIN - this will give you the purest form (other than making it yourself - which I will discuss on another day)

How to use as a deep conditioner (after shampooing):

Shampoo your hair (I use my liquid black soap) and dry the hair until it's damp
Coat the hair with the coconut oil (paying close attention the ends; do not over do it though)
Place a shower cap on your head and wrap with a towel for 20 minutes.
Rinse hair (you can leave a little in the hair as a leave-in)

How to use as a deep conditioner (before shampooing):

Coat the hair with the coconut oil
Place a shower cap on and wrap with a towel (or heated cap) for 20 minutes.
Rinse and Shampoo

Raw African Black Soap Benefits

Well, as you know I am trying to make some products for hair and body. Recently, I have made body butters, soap bars, and lotions. Now, I have made some liquid black soap from Raw African Black Soap.
For those of you who do not know what Raw African Black Soap is...read this information from the site www.agbangakarite.com:

In Togo, black soap is the only soap used by mothers to wash their newborn babies, as its purity makes it gentle and non-drying for their sensitive skin. Our black soap is produced in small batches by hand, using age-old traditional techniques. Our authentic African black soap is made in Togo from pure virgin oils following fair trade and organic guidelines. The ingredients of our African black soap are virgin palm kernel oil, pure, unrefined shea butter and potash produced from the ashes of plantain leaves and bark from a local tree called Agow. The high percentage of shea butter (48%) is one of the unique features of our soap. In addition, there are no chemicals added as preservatives, color enhancers, or fragrances.

Okay, so now that you have learned about Raw African Black Soap (ingredients: virgin palm kernel oil, pure, unrefined shea butter and potash produced from the ashes of plantain leaves and bark from a local tree called Agow) we are on the same page that this is such a WONDERFUL soap. It comes in rough chucks and it is not in a standard bar shape nor is it totally BLACK. Please be aware of bar soaps that are totally BLACK in color because these soaps are fake black soaps. The color ranges from light brown to dark brown (depending on the region of Africa it comes from and the how dark the plaintain is after being burned). BELOW THIS IS NOT BLACK SOAP - it may have some of the same ingredients however, it's not TRUE RAW AFRICAN BLACK SOAP

Now, what I have done was took some of the the raw African Black Soap and placed it in a jar with chammoile infused water to make it a liquid soap. In the morning (which will be a whole 24 hours) all of the soap will dissolve leaving me a "melted chocolate" looking soap. It'll have the same power as the bar soap but, just easier to manage and it can be used as a shampoo as well!!!!

As promised a few days ago I said I was going to put a picture of the black soap that I made into liquid. See below:

I used chamomile infused water and the block of black soap to make it turn into liquid. It is good good good! I didn't put a scent to it so, the smell is the original black soap and a hint of chamomile.

This is all natural and I am happy I made it. I used it on myself and my daughter and it was very good. Not drying and left our skin nice and clean. I used it as a shampoo it really defined our curly pattern and left us both with soft-moisturized hair!

Also, I know people may think "how can you use a soap that is black? yuck how dirty is that??" well, yes the color is black but, that doesn't make it dirty. When it lathers up it makes white bubbles just like any other soap...soo there!

My Favorite Hair Brands

Here you will find a list of products for braids, twists, and locs - including the synthetic hair brands.

For regular single braids I use the RastAfri jumbo kanekalon hair. This hair is soft on my fingers, better quality for your hair, and resembles human hair. I also, use this hair the extension cornrow services as well.

To keep the shine and condition the scalp I like the Dr. Miracle's Braid Spray. It has a tingle feel and a semi-strong "medicated" smell. Or, try the Taliah Waajid Protective Mist Bodifier. This is an all natural product, great for keeping your hair moisturized while braided. This spray also as the "tingle" feel as well.

For the twist services I use the Black N Gold brand of synthetic dreadlock kinky hair and a different variety of products (not all at once though). I use an alcohol free gel called Twists N Locs mixed with some extra virgin olive oil and Taliah Waajid's African Healing Oyl.

With the starting Locs and maintaining them there are many options available to you. You can even make your own loc butters and oils. I use the Taliah Waajid Lock It Up or Nubian Kinks Locing Promade. I have also made some loc butter (got the recipe online) to maintain my client's locs.

The ingredients are shea butter, mango butter, coconut oil, lanolin, sweet almond oil, jojoba oil, avacado oil, ylang ylang, and some vanilla fragrance oil (or you can use whatever fragrance oil you like).

I also found this great recipe for hair oil:

2 oz. Shea Oil
1 oz. Coconut Oil
1/2 oz. Olive Oil,
4 drops peppermint Oil
2 drops Tea Tree Oil
4 oz. bottle to store the ingredients

Well, I just wanted to give a little info on some of the products I like and use. If you have a recipe or know a good product let me know. All of the products and hair I mention can be found at your local beauty supply stores or online.

Loc Butter Recipe

I wanted to let you know about a Loc Butter recipe I found (can also be used if you don't have locs). I'm all about making your own products to eliminate the synthetic and harmful ingredients that really do not help our hair but, just look good.

The recipe below is for 4oz. worth of loc butter but, you can double the amount for 8oz. or make half the amount for 2oz. (picture of the jar sizes are below). You can find all of these supplies from www.fromnaturewithlove.com.

2 TBSP Shea Butter

2 TBSP Mango Butter

2 TBSP Coconut Oil

1 TSP Aloe Vera Gel

1 TSP Sweet Almond Oil

1 TSP Jojoba Oil

10 drops of Ylang Ylang Essential Oil

1/8 - 1/4 TSP of Brown Sugar Fragrance Oil ( or any scent, your choice)

Melt the butters, gel, and oils in a double boiler. Once melted add the Brown Sugar fragance oil. Once everything has melted down take it off the heat and add the Ylang Ylang essential oil. Stir with a popsicle stick. Pour into the jar - let sit for a few minutes before placing on the top. Let cool and you have your very own loc butter!!!

The Ylang Ylang essential oil has healing properties. Please be careful when dealing with essential oils and DO NOT EXCEED the amount in the recipe. If you do your scalp can become irritated. Ylang Ylang (pronounce ee-lang) has a pleasant floral smell with a hint of fruit.

I haven't made this yet however, when I do I will put a review regarding this recipe. I really hope it works and has a good hold for my clients. I will let you know soon. If you have tried it let me know how you feel about it.

Natural Hair Extensions

I love natural hair as you may know. But, it never occurred to me to do sew-in weaves that resembles our natural hair. Now, don't get me wrong I know they are out there but, I didn't think of trying it out on my clients until 2 weeks.

I do the Micros withe Sew-In Weave and one day a new client booked an appointment for that style. Except this time we did just the sew-in without the micro braids and my goodness...if I do say so myself GORGEOUS!!!

This is a full head sew-in with the front out to cover the tracks. Hair used: Milky Way Human Hair (ripple curl). I finger-combed the extension hair and did 2-strand flat twist in the front (styling lotion by Taliah Waajid). GORGEOUS GORGEOUS.

SALON REVIEW: Hair Glamour by Tiffany P*

I don't usually review salons (because I don't usually go) but because I really really love my hair I had to share. As most of you know, I wear my hair natural (afro, flat twists, cornrows, kinky twists, individual braids, etc...) but, sometimes I like to get a press n curl and a good trim. I have tried one shop here in Oakland I really didn't like it (the girl burned my hair out literally!).
